"My name is Dylané. I'm originally from Los Angeles, by way of Fayetteville, NC. I’m a double tarheel, and currently a second year med student. I have visited 19 countries thus far, and my best friend and I are trying to visit 30 countries before we turn 30. Oh! I can also stand on my hands for 2 minutes because I was a gymnast for over 2 decades.
While we normally think of crashing waves and sand between your toes when we hear “the beach,” here at UNC you will learn that our beach will satiate your palate and often serve as a social meeting point. The Beach is a centralized cafeteria that is used by various health professionals ranging from nursing students, attendings, dental students, and of course medical students and faculty. There are plenty of seats to go around to enhance your interprofessional networking, or to socialize with your mentors or peers. Different food venues are available such as Chik-fil-A, and Mediterranean Deli, and other food options ranging from southern food to burritos and nachos rotate through. If you find yourself meal prepping, there are microwaves available for use as well. All-in-all, there’s a little something for everyone to satisfy your hunger, or interprofessional curiosity."

"My name is Brooke Spratte, and I am a current third year student. I went to UNC for undergraduate and was so thrilled to be back for at least four more years. A fun fact about me - it took me 25 years to discover I like chocolate, peanut butter, but mostly the combination.

As you enter your third year as a UNC medical student, the school uniquely offers several campus options to complete your Application Phase. These campuses are Wilmington, Asheville, and the Central campus, which includes UNC, Greensboro, Raleigh, and surrounding areas. Each one really provides unique opportunities and allows students to better tailor their clinical experience to their own personal goals and learning styles. Specifically, the Central and Wilmington Campuses follow a block-style curriculum, where students rotate through three courses (each being four-months long). These are Care of Specific Populations, Hospital and Surgical Care, and Community Based Longitudinal Care. Conversely, the Asheville program is a longitudinal, integrated curriculum where students are placed in outpatient settings for the majority of the year, allowing them to follow their patients in a variety of health care settings. I personally chose to stay at Central campus for the proximity to family and my research mentors, but I am always jealous of my Wilmington and Asheville campus friends enjoying time at the beach, breweries, or nearby hiking trails. Don’t worry – this is not a decision you have to make anytime soon. Plus, the school of medicine does a fantastic job of providing many opportunities for you to explore and learn about each campus throughout your first and second year!
If you’re anything like me, then food is pretty much constantly top of mind. Food options at UNC Hospital include Starbucks and several cafes located throughout the hospital, with options such as breakfast sandwiches, made to order waffles, smoothies, salads, burrito bowls, and freshly baked goods. One convenient way to make purchases is through Freedom Pay, which is an alternative way to pay without a credit card or cash. After making an account, you’re given a FreedomPay tag that you simply just need to tap at the register to pay a purchase! Plus – major bonus – you get a 20% discount on all purchases automatically."

"My name is Alicia Anderson. I went to Wake Forest University for my undergraduate studies but I am originally from Fargo, North Dakota. A fun fact about me is that I play in a local flute choir called 'Flute Cocktail' through the Raleigh Area Flute Association.

As medical students, we spend a lot of time studying.
UNC provides each student with an iPad for class/studying and clinical use as well as access to USMLERx and UWorld, which are study resources that have popular questions and flashcard banks. With our curriculum, we have flexibility in what study tools we use. We also have flexibility to pick the study environment we need whether that be classrooms, the student lounge, as you’ll learn about on this tour, your home office, coffee shops in the local community, or here at the Health Sciences Library, also known as the HSL. The HSL has several floors of study space, group study rooms that can be reserved online, printers, and books and medical journals. There are also dedicated librarians to help find resources for class work or research projects. My favorite part of the HSL: the coffee shop, Friends Café.

Most of our Medical Students live in Chapel Hill or Carrboro, which are connected towns. The heart of Chapel Hill is Franklin Street, with many restaurants, bars, coffee shops, a couple of breweries, ice cream stores, and a sort-of smallish version of Target. Franklin Street connects with Main Street in Carrboro, which houses more restaurants and bars as well as some music venues like Cat’s Cradle. My favorite would have to be Open Eye Café, where I have spent a lot of time watching lecture capture and studying. The Carrboro Farmer’s Market is a popular Wednesday afternoon or Saturday morning spot, and a great way to support the community while staying healthy. Additionally, Chapel Hill transit provides free busses to get to/from campus as well as these community spots. While Chapel Hill is certainly a pretty classic college town, the larger cities of Durham and Raleigh are also easily accessible from UNC’s campus via a larger bus system that connects the entire research triangle together. This is great for fostering inter-institutional collaboration with folks at Duke and NC State, and it also means UNC students can engage with the vibrant nightlife and culture of these cities as well!"

"I'm Alexis Flen! I'm originally from Fayetteville NC and went to UNC-Chapel Hill for undergrad. Our tour today actually features a lot of med students who went to UNC-chapel hill for college, so keep in mind that our school is made up of people from tons of different backgrounds and institutions. Fun fact: I aspire to be an orthopedic surgeon and enjoy working on curricular innovation.
Marsico Hall is this giant research building behind me, and I know it best for containing the internationally renowned Marsico Lung Institute and UNC Cystic Fibrosis Center. The MLI supplies media, cell lines, and data to researchers globally. Researchers like our very own Pulmonary block director Dr. Scott Randell, whose research focuses on cystic fibrosis. But innovation in this facility ranges from immunology to genetics to cancer biology as well, and medical students can take advantage of the university’s over-1-billion-dollar research and development budget by participating in this groundbreaking work during our summer breaks or longitudinally throughout the year. I used to work in this institute and I can say it’s home to some of the most intelligent, charismatic researchers I have ever met. Medical students also have continued access to the Saladelia Café, conference rooms, and lobby, which are ideal areas for study. If you’re in the area I would encourage you all to explore this beautiful building and the research opportunities within it.
So I know what you're thinking: how will you be spending your last summer before your second year of medical school? At UNC, there are so many opportunities to explore your medical and personal interests. From the Carolina Medical Student Research Program (CMSRP) to the Honduran Health Alliance, there are a wide range of options for domestic and international outreach that enable you to cultivate research or clinical skills for your future. Your options are not limited to travel or research, but only by your imagination. If you do not find a program that attracts you, you can create your own with programming with opportunities such as the Schweitzer Fellowship. Feel like volunteering? Come help out our very own Student Health Action Coalition (SHAC), providing clinical care to real patients year-round. Interested in teaching or mentorship? You can look into being a teaching assistant for the immersive Medical Education Development program for premedical students. As you can see at UNC, the opportunities are endless!"

"I’m Siobhan and I’m a second year med student from Alaska. I went to the University of South Carolina for undergrad. My fun fact is that during my MS1 year I went skydiving with a broken rib.
One of the best things about UNC’s curriculum is its flexibility. We have lectures in the morning from 8-12, but if that’s not your style you can watch it all later on lecture capture, in the library, in your bed, or at your favorite coffee shop – anywhere, anytime. I personally do a mix of both: if I particularly enjoy the lecturer or subject I come to class, but sometimes I wake up at 11 a.m. and watch it from my desk. This option is great for people who have children, are night owls, or simply want to structure their day differently. My schedule changes depending on my responsibilities that day, usually goes like this: Wake up, learn new material, work out, eat free lunch at an interest group meeting, review this week’s material, eat dinner, hang out with friends or do something fun, and then go to sleep (of course with plenty of breaks to play with my dog). It’s a lot of studying, but I always find time for my hobbies, friends, and family during the week. The school encourages us to balance wellness and hard work to achieve our goals in med school.
The Pass/Fail system UNC has adopted means that everyone who scores a 70 or higher in a course receives the same P on their transcript. This allows students to strive for understanding concepts, not just answering test questions. Furthermore, it means students are not ranked by score. This takes away the competition between your peers and replaces it with collaboration. In the class groupchat, every single piece of helpful material gets shared, whether it be a study guide, an email from a professor, or a useful youtube video. Before and after tests, someone always sends out an encouraging message to the whole class. My favorite thing about UNC School of Medicine is the collaborative nature of my classmates. We study together and one teaches another the concepts they may be struggling with. Everyone has academic strengths and weaknesses and we work together to make sure that we all learn and pass together."

"My name is Vincent Abiona and I am a third year medical student. I attended UNC Chapel Hill for undergrad. Fun fact about me is I picked up skateboarding as my quarantine hobby.
Once a week we have a class called PCC which stands for Patient Centered Care. It’s a course designed to teach you the basic clinical skills of a physician - everything from interviewing a patient to giving a physical exam and creating a diagnosis. You will meet weekly with a PCC tutor, who is an experienced physician, and a few other students to learn how to apply the concepts that you learn in lecture in clinical settings. You also get to practice your skills on standardized patients, which are like actors who help simulate patient interactions in clinical setting. One of my favorite things about PCC is having a physician who gets to see me grow as a medical student.
Starting first year, every student will attend Clinical Week. This is your chance to apply what you’ve learned in lecture and PCC in the real clinical setting. You finally get a chance to put on your white coat for something other than pictures! Students are placed in hospitals and clinics all over North Carolina. I know what you’re thinking, “I’ll be working as part of a medical team? Already?” Not to worry, that’s what PCC is for! Plus, you won’t be alone. You’ll be working with some of NC’s finest physicians. Take this time to practice what you’ve learned, learn from your preceptor and the medical staff around you, and of course, have fun!"

"My name is Amir Feinberg. I’m from Belmont and I went to Boston University where I majored in International Relations. A fun fact about myself, I sang the national anthem for the Red Sox opening weekend at Fenway Park with my college a cappella group.
On top of the traditional curriculum, UNC has a ton of electives that both preclinical and clinical students can take advantage of. While the curriculum does give us all of the information we need to pass our exams and to be great physicians, the electives let us really individualize our own learning and allow us to shape our education into something that interests us personally. For example, if you are passionate about working with Spanish speaking populations, UNC has one of the leading medical Spanish programs in the country. CAMPOS was created to address a critical need in our state: a shortage of linguistically and culturally competent physicians caring for the growing number of Latinx patients. Other examples of elective topics range from refugee health to geriatric care to educational technology. I myself am involved in an elective called Racial Equity in medicine, where we work to correct institutional racism within the medical school and the broader medical community and healthcare system as a whole. What I love most about the electives here at Chapel Hill is that you can get involved as soon as your first semester in medical school!
It is so easy to get lost in all of the information we are taught in lecture and so often we forget that we will actually be treating patients one day. What I love about the patient centered care course is that they bring us into the hospital within the first months of medical school to put what we learned to the test. With bedside teaching, we get to interview patients, practice our physical exam skills, and work on clinical reasoning with real patients!"

"My name is Aneesh, and I am an MS2 at UNC SOM. I am from Tallahassee, FL, and went to Georgetown University for undergrad. A fun fact about me is that I love that otters hold hands while they sleep so that they don’t drift away from each other.

MEJ (also known as Mary Ellen Jones) is one of the nicest buildings on campus with plenty of study nooks and rooms fully equipped with TV screens, projectors, and whiteboards that come in handy for your educational needs. Multiple times a week you will have small groups in MEJ that allow for working through patient cases and intricate concepts covered in lecture, while providing clinical nuance and guidance for patient-centered care. Your small group of about six (6) students will stick with you for the semester, so you form bonds and make friends, too. Moreover, we have monthly ultrasound sessions in MEJ that teach how to best conduct and interpret ultrasounds and develop clinical skills. Initially, you may feel like you have no idea what you are doing (and you may actually have no idea what you are doing) but THAT IS OKAY! A lot of people (myself included) feel like learning this skill is like learning a new language, and with practice, fuzzy gray dots on a screen will turn into something recognizable."

"I’m Amir Jabr, a current MS3. I attended UNC Chapel Hill for undergrad and majored in Business Administration. Psychiatry, and Sports Medicine are two of my interests. My fun fact is that I play the drums, and I love UNC basketball.
Here at UNC, we have Scholarly concentrations, which are essentially an organized way to take extra electives and design research projects that revolve around a certain topic.
We have a wide variety of concentrations, from ultrasound technology to medical education, and joining any of them will get you quickly connected with faculty members who focus on these fields. I decided to add on a medical education concentration to my med school curriculum because I am interested in teaching, and I find medical technology intriguing. It was great taking the Med Ed Elective and being able to go on field trips to learn about virtual reality, curriculums, block chain, and other very unique ways that the teaching of medicine is evolving.

At UNC SOM, all students are required to take Social Health Systems for 3 semesters. I personally enjoyed SHS because it allowed me to learn about my classmates and their viewpoints on important issues such as racial disparities, insurance, and resource allocation. It is a great opportunity to meet people in a small group setting and to learn about how real-world issues influence health and health care. For your third semester, you can choose from a variety of classes such as Global Health and Medical Ethics, Sexual and Gender Minority Health, Death and Dying in America, Health Care Reform, The Impact of Jails and Prisons on Health Outcomes, and many more. I was in an animal experimentation class and we were able to tour the EPA on campus, and discuss the ethical principles related to animal and human experimentation."

The flexibility of a UNC medical students’ daily schedule means that we have plenty of time to engage with extracurricular activities, and many of these are hosted by the medical school itself. We got your classics, like student government, an a capella group, and the opportunity to mentor premed undergrads. Much of the student body also participates in community service, such as by volunteering in the clinics run by the Student Health Action Coalition or the Latinx Medical Student Association. We can also get to know each other better through any of our casual intramural sports teams.

"Hi there I'm Minna! I'm a second-year graduate student in the neuroscience curriculum working in the Bowles center for Alcohol Studies.

BONDURANT HALL:
During your first year with BBSP you will be part of small cohort of first-year students known as First Year Group. First Year groups are led by faculty mentors and also include more advanced PhD student peer mentors such as myself. This group is designed to help with the adjustment into graduate school as it is a place to discuss rotations and coursework. In addition to the community aspect, there are also opportunities to develop scientific presentation skills, writing, communication, and best practices for responsible conduct of research. As someone who was initially very uncomfortable with presenting to an audience, I especially found the scientific presentation module most helpful to me throughout my time in graduate school.

If you are interested in bridging the gap between the research community and broader community, UNC BBSP is a great place to be. There are numerous opportunities to be engaged with the outreach efforts led by different groups here at UNC. In particular, at NC DNA Day, graduate students and postdocs at UNC visit high schools all around NC to share their love of science. However even outside of NC DNA day, there are so many more opportunities to do outreach work, such as the UNC Science Expo and the outreach activities that are affiliated with the different clubs at UNC. Getting involved in science outreach is a great way to foster your own excitement for science, to communicate promising scientific advances to the public, and to demonstrate a “broader impact” of your work that is increasingly critical to funding agencies.

BEACH CAFE
I am currently at The Beach Cafe. Here you can enjoy several options of food including hot entrees, sandwiches, salads, crepes, and snacks. They also offer some popular local restaurants on certain days such as Med Deli, Italian Pizzeria III, and Cholanad. There are a lot of great options for food while on campus. Other places I enjoy include are the food trucks outside that come once a week to the Genetic Medicine Building. I enjoy getting snacks and coffee at the Friends’ cafe next to the Health Sciences Library, Alpine Deli inside of the Thurston-Bowles building and Saladelia inside of Marsico Hall. But the Beach Cafe is probably the best food you can get near the School of Medicine research buildings, and in non-COVID times it's a lively area to get out of lab and socialize."

"Hi, and welcome to UNC! I hope you are enjoying your virtual tour so far. My name is Pierre-Emmanuel N’Guetta. I’m currently a 2nd year graduate student in the department of Cell Biology and Physiology in the lab of Dr. Lori O’Brien where I study kidney development. Fun fact about me is that I am originally from Ivory coast in west Africa and that I speak 3 different languages.

THURSTON BOWLES BUILDING:
Thurston Bowles is the giant research facility behind me. Completed in 1995, the Thurston-Bowles building houses many internationally renown departments to cite a few we have the Thurston Arthritis Research Center, the UNC Gene Therapy Center and the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies which is one of 20 national Alcohol Research Centers funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). In addition, the innovations coming from this facility are very diverse with research ranging from gene therapy, animal medicine, and pediatrics. The Thurston-Bowles building also houses two core facility: the UNC Vector Core which work as a full-service viral vector production organization and the Human Applications Laboratories (HAL) created to support preclinical and clinical gene therapy studies.
Students also have access to the Alpine Bagel cafe area in the back of the building where you can grab a cup of coffee or a bagel while doing some work. I strongly encourage everyone to take some time and explore this beautiful building and all the research opportunities within it.

I know that as you are choosing which institution to join, you may have many questions and uncertainties? I did too. However, one key thing that sets UNC apart from other institution is the collaborative spirit that is nurtured by all the people that you will meet here at Carolina. Being able to interact with people with different perspectives, approaches and experiences is a clear bonus that will prevents you from getting a tunnel vision. It has been my pleasure to show you a piece of my university and I hope to see you here next year. "

"I'm Sarah Anne, a first-year graduate student in the BBSP, interested in Pharmaceutical Scienes. I like to spend my free time in the outdoors. UNC is in a great location to easily travel to the beach or to the mountains.

MARY ELLEN JONES BUILDING:
Welcome to Mary Ellen Jones! Although this building was originally built in 1978, it has been recently updated - and upgraded. I love the view through the large glass windows, especially in the morning light! Mary Ellen Jones is home to Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering laboratories, many with interdisciplinary research in pharmaceutics. I have done both of my rotations so far in this building. Here I study ways to sustain the delivery of drugs over time, focusing on women's health.

KENAN STADIUM:
Welcome to Kenan Memorial Stadium! The University of North Carolina Tar Heels wrapped up the 2020 football season ranked 13th in the country and secured an invitation to the coveted Orange Bowl. With average October temperatures in the 60s, you'll find that gameday is a beautiful way to enjoy a Saturday. Did I mention tickets are free for students?

DEAN DOME:
This is the Dean Dome, named for the legendary basketball coach Dean Smith. With seven national championships so far, UNC basketball is always a competitively ranked team. And as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, there is no shortage of rivals, but none quite as strong as the rivalry against the Duke Blue Devils just down the road. If you want to feel the spirit of Carolina, this is the place to be."

"Hi! It's Shea again, a first year BBSP student interested in Pathology and Translational Medicine. When I'm not studying cardiovascular biology I like to go to the local farmers market for fresh produce so I can craft a delicious homemade meal.

HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY:
The Health Sciences Library offers many spaces for collaboration, discussion, and studying. All health affairs students and faculty have access to this library. Here you can study in the open with your peers or reserve study rooms and conference halls for complete quite. Attached to the library is Friends cafe, a comfortable space to engage with fellow students and faculty while grabbing a cup of coffee or bite to eat.

Many transit systems serve UNC including the free fair bus routes to the Chapel Hill and Carrboro area. While many students take advantage of the free buses, you can also chose to pay for a parking permit on campus or at one of the park and ride lots around town. I personally enjoy biking to campus everyday. I'm happy to report there are great bike lanes and paths in and around campus should you desire to bike or perhaps walk. The buses also have bike racks so you can choose to bike one way if that's more appealing."

"Hi everybody! I hope you're having fun on your virtual tour so far. My name is Sophie and I'm a first year BBSP student looking to join the Division of Pharmacoengineering and Molecular Pharmaceutics. When I'm not looking into new ways to engineer our immune cells, I really love petting dogs.

GENETIC MEDICINE BUILDING:
The building behind me is our Genetic Medicine Building, GMB for short. It houses the School of Pharmacy, the departments of Genetics, Biochemistry & Biophysics, and Pharmacology. It's one of the largest buildings on campus with around 333,000 square feet. If you're lucky you may run into Nobel Laureate, Aziz Sancar, who was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work in mapping the cellular mechanisms underlying nucleotide excision repair.
Even during a pandemic, it's incredibly easy to get involved in activities outside the lab- albeit virtual ones. You can advocate for the greater graduate and professional student community by joining our Graduate and Professional Student Federation, GPSF. Or if you're interested in increasing science outreach, something like Women in Science, WINS, or volunteering at NC DNA Day may be for you. Whether you’re really passionate about professional development, mental health, or dogs you're sure to find a way to engage with that here at Chapel Hill."

"Hello again and welcome to the Lineberger cancer center. UNC Lineberger is the only public comprehensive cancer center in the state of North Carolina, and also happens to be where my lab is located. This is the Swanstrom lab where I work on my PhD dissertation project which focuses on HIV.
Now, the lab that you decide to rotate at, should you choose UNC, may or may not look a lot like this. This is an example of a closed lab bench setup, which means only our lab members have access to these rooms. Additionally, you will notice that each lab bench looks different. That is because each member in my lab has different organizational tendencies. When you are in lab it is important to make your lab space your own, so feel free to decorate it appropriately so you function to be the best scientist you can be!"

"Hi, and welcome to UNC! I hope you are enjoying your virtual tour so far. I’m Caylie, a second-year Chemistry student in the David Lawrence lab. I love the Chapel Hill area because it has a small-town feel with a lot of the convenience of living near a city. There are plenty of nature trails nearby, and a great variety of restaurants and shops near campus.

GENOME SCIENCES & FORDHAM BUILDINGS:
You are standing (well, virtually) in the courtyard between Fordham and the Genome Sciences building. To my right, the big brick building here is Fordham, where many Biology and Genetics labs are located. If you are interested in either of these areas, there is a chance you will be spending time here for your rotations.

This fancy-looking concrete and glass building to my left is the Genome Sciences Building. Built in 2013, this is one of the newer buildings on campus, and holds many Biology as well as some Chemistry labs. It also holds the Genomic Café on the ground floor, perfect for grabbing a morning pick-me-up on your way into lab.

Rotations in BBSP are structured the same for all first years, regardless of the program you are considering. Each rotation is ten weeks long, which is plenty of time to get to know your labmates, PI, and the lab environment. Some students have very specific interests and decide which professors they will rotate with early on, while others prefer to wait and figure out who they will rotate with once they have gotten a better idea of what they are looking for. Whatever your preference, BBSP is associated with more than 350 research faculty across 14 programs, so you have a lot of options!"

Walking trails wind through this old-growth forest on the edge of the UNC campus and here on the southwestern corner of Battle Park, sits the Koch Memorial Forest Theatre - a stone amphitheater with over a century of history.
In 1916, the university celebrated the three-hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare’s death by holding outdoor dramas in Battle Park. Several years later, when Frederick Koch joined the faculty to teach playwriting, the university built a permanent stone amphitheatre at the site. In 1953, the university dedicated the theatre to Koch, calling it “an open air palace of light and sound, haunt of birds and breezes and human voices, home of natural beauty, poetry and drama, set upon the warm earth, in enduring stone, to commemorate an ardent genius.” Today the Forest Theater is home to many performances, including the Paperhand Puppet Show.
